Well, I guess a book can’t win an Emmy but if you looking for a well written, evidence based report on diet and exercise, then check out my buddy Brent Brookbush’s new book “Fitness or Fiction: The Truth About Diet and Exercise.”

It’s well worth the $15 on Amazon and has good stuff in it for fitness professionals and those looking to learn more about diet and exercise and how they relate to your goals. Brent has poured of 6 years of effort into this book! It has been a labor of love and you will benefit from his efforts.

There is too much garbage and hype out there and this book will boil down what you can glean from research, not just opinion. Arm yourself with the knowledge in this text as it will come in handy with your clients or your own health and wellness program.

Enjoy this beautiful fall day!

Happy Tuesday!

I now have the privilege of uploading videos to YouTube that are longer than 15 minutes. I am guessing that I have passed a certain number of uploads and maintained a positive status with You Tube. So basically I have not uploaded any iphone videos of a Bruins broadcast or anything like that. I did recently post a series of videos on You Tube giving a basic overview of the OPT Model over the course of five videos. Visit my YouTube channel if you want to see them http://youtube.com/theericbeard. You probably notice that I have been investing my time outside of my blog lately I logged in last week to post and spent an hour fixing the typos in my last post. Sheesjh! What a stinker! My apologies for letting that go out. The content was good but what a mess! So that is fit for public consumption and worth a peak when you have time

More importantly is that I uploaded an entire DVD of mine to You Tube. It is finishing processing right now. The DVD is actually the prologue installment for my DVD series Secrets and Staples of Training the Athletic Shoulder. (of course available at http://athleticshoulder.com ) it is 54 minutes long and has some greta stuff in it if I do say so myself. Please watch it and let me know what you think! I am confident that you will find it helpful.

I am talking about Dr. Dre of course!

Dre is looking buff!

Rhianna, Eminem and Dr. Dre just blew it up at the Grammys.

After 2 straight hours of folding laundry while my wife was frosting cupcakes for the kids Valentines Day parties tomorrow I am sitting down and taking a “break”. My wife has had the Grammys on in the background the entire time. I paid attention to a few parts, like the Rhianna, Eminenem and Dre performance, Justin Bieber and Usher and when Lady Antebellum won a Grammy for the song “Need You Now”.

Did they win 3 Grammys?

What struck me was when Hillary Scott from Lady Antebellum was speaking after receiving the award. She said how her and the rest of the band’s life changed in the last year because of the success of this song. She broke into tears as the moment washed over her and she was wisked off stage. It reminds me of the power of a year. It has been said that most men overestimate what they can accomplish in a year but underestimate what they can do in a decade. I wonder what the last year of her life has been like? How hard has she worked? How many shows has she done? Interviews she has given? I can’t imagine.

What if we looked back even farther? Over the last 10 years of her life? How many bad songs has she sung? How many hours of practice has she put in? How many times has she wanted to quit? How many times has she sung to an unappreciative audience? During the last year of her life she has experienced exponential growth in terms of commercial success, but she has been laying the groundwork for much longer. They say it takes 10,000 hours to craft and develop a world class, elite athlete. That can represent a 10 year growth period. Most people only hear about the Olympic athlete during the Olympics, but they have built their opportunity to compete at the Olympics the decade prior. They not only train in four year cycles to peak for the Olympic Games, but some on eight year cycles to peak for two sets of games!

Not to mention a run at Dancing With the Stars!

So what does that have to do with us? Well, the old adage is true, you reap what you sew. The results that we have in our lives, with our clients, in our love life, in our bank accounts and with our health are mostly indicative of what we have done over the last number of years. Our ability to work with a varied and challenging client based is developed by researching issues that we are unfamiliar with and then actually using trial and error to figure out which approach is best for a certain individual. We read journals, watch webinars chat with other professionals to grow our knowledge base. It never ends. Think of the people who just “apply, apply, apply” what they have known for years and have never added to? I am sure there are some areas of our lives that we have either not added to or conversely added to but not applied what we have learned. That second part resonates with me. I have studied and researched information pertaining to several aspects of my life. It is always easier to learn about some aspects of life compared to to others and it is easier to apply information in some areas more easily compared to others as well. If you take a minute and think about it, what ares of your life have you neglected learning more about? If you think about work…for example…maybe you have studied plenty about corrective exercise but not much about supplements? Then on the other side of the coin, what ares of life or your practice have you neglected to apply this great information that you have spent time and money researching? I can think of a few for me:)

Anywhoo…here are a couple of videos that I have done over the last couple of weeks. One on basic TRX Row technique (dos and don’ts) and an SMR technique that can loosen up and mobilize your thoracic spine. Enjoy and Happy Valentines Day!!!

I am listening to some Jay-Z on the Logan Express shuttle form the airport back home after an AWESOME 1 day personal training summit titled “Success Driven 2010: The Ultimate Personal Training Seminar” in Dallas, TX.

I think he likes my style

The career school ATI put the shin dig on and I tell ya they did it right! Top notch facilities, breakfast and lunch for attendees and a killer line up all for only $85!!! I got the party started with my presentation “Save Your Back: Get Your Butt in Gear” which went over very well. I had an wonderful audience of @250 current faculty and students from ATI, alumni and fitness professionals from the Dallas area.

Juan Carlos Santana, Eric Beard, Todd Durkin, Dianne Vives at the ATI Summit 2010

Next up was Todd Durkin, who I have enjoyed watching over the years. He is an LMT like me who combines fitness with bodywork. Right up my alley! Todd is perhaps most famous for training Drew Brees and Ladanian Tomlinson amongst other top level athletes. Todd is an energetic guy and I have to tell you I was impressed by the man he is. Gracious, friendly, humble, hard working and engaging (FYI Dr.Wayne Dyer is playing on my itunes now…talk about a jump!). Todd may or may not have known who I was before this weekend but he greeted me as if I was a long lost friend. It was genuine, not saccharine and I felt so proud when he repeated told me that I did a good job on stage. Todd presented mostly on personal/professional development and I loved his stuff! There was some crossover in what he taught and I teach and books we recommend, which always makes me feel like I am on the right path when I see someone with his type of success doing some of the same things that I am doing. I have to say that meeting Todd was the highlight of the show for me.

Dianne Vives was up next. Dianne pounded the pavement, knocked on doors and drove this event to be what it was. I have know who Dianne was for years, but this is the first time we got to meet. She was all that I have heard and more. So welcoming, gracious and friendly and she was excellent on stage. She developed rapport with the audience and engaged them throughout with her personality and offered up instantly applicable coaching and cuing tips. Dianne focussed mostly on exercise technique and teaching tips.

Juan Carlos Santana brought his “Juan-ness” to the stage next and lit the crowd up with his presentation on metabolic training. If you know Carlos, then you know, what you see is what you get. He is a straight shooter with no tolerance for bull. I got to have dinner with Carli Strength, Brian and Dianne, from ATI, Jacob from Perform Better and Carlos Thursday (Todd’s flight was cancelled and he got in late) night and I enjoyed hearing JC’s stories. He is a good guy and has some opinions for sure, but another successful icon in the industry that was approachable all weekend and willing to engage others. An example for professionals of any level. Be yourself and follow your beliefs. JC does just that. I did catch JC releasing his ITB before he went on stage…

I see you!!!

We each spoke for an hour then had breakout/hands on sessions in the afternoon. We each set up in different corners of the ballroom and had 30 minute sessions then the students rotated to the next session. JC buried the group with some metabolic training protocols, Todd pulled out some his Under Armor challenge workouts and Dianne whooped up on the group with some Sandbells (a great newly revamped toy!).

These were awesome for grip strength and versatility

I did corrective exercise for low back protocols. I skipped SMR since we had more students than planned and we were a bit short on rollers. No fault of Perform Better, more students signed up than planned, which we all loved! By the way…thanks Perform Better and Sandbells for the toys I used during my breakout session. So I started with 4 progressions of a kneeling hip flexor stretch followed by 4 versions of a standing adductor stretch. Next was activation for the glutes. Glute max-stability ball bridge with the Sandbells. Glute medius-clamshells and side lying leg raises. For integration we did reach squats with either Sandbells, Stability balls or chairs. We reviewed step ups and did some lunge progressions ending with a lunge with an anterior reach to curl. The groups were rotating to me from JC and they were pretty spent, but they felt some work in the glutes for sure.

I came away from the event invigorated by the students, they were hungry to learn, energetic and appreciative. I am also energized and motivated by being on stage and working with Dianne, Todd and JC. They make me want to be better and achieve more. I have more to contribute to others and I have some ideas on how to reach out. I can see my future more clearly as well as a future that we can create together in this industry.

Let’s make it happen!

Feels good to say! You may have figured that out by now if you know me pretty well, but if you met me at a workshop, you might think otherwise, at least I like to think that’s how I come off:) Now I don’t pretend to be something that I am not. In fact I do my best to be transparent to colleagues, friends (Facebook and in the flesh!), followers (my Tweeps!), employers and family. I have been reading Seth Godin’s book “Tribes” which was given to me by my buddy DPS (David Petronne Swalve) and it is getting me fired up!!!

Tribes by Seth Godin, a great and quick read

Many people choose to avoid a leadership role because they are afraid of being wrong, criticized or made to look like a fool. I have experienced all three of these and honestly I do not like it. I am uncomfortable with being criticized and hate to look “bad”. (inset joke here for my friends). putting myself out in social media and creating educational products has been a risk for me because I have had to open my thoughts, opinions and how I live my life up to judgement of thousands of people. Is it easier to do so online that in person? Yes, but it is a risk nonetheless. Part of me has been looking for a greater platform to initiate change, to become a catalyst for the next evolution and to become a more substantive part of peoples lives. I want to contribute at a deeper level. I want to make a difference in more people’s lives. Being a parent and husband has been more rewarding than I have ever imagined. Reaching the successes that I have in my career have been wildly unthinkable (coming from a perspective of self doubt, not of hubris). As I type this blog post I am in Nanjing China getting ready to work with the Chinese Tennis Association at their Nanjing National Clinic. This is the 2nd year that they have flown me to China to work with their players and coaches. I mean come on…that is ridiculous, isn’t it? Me getting hired to go to China???? Yesterday I was able to cross a HUGE accomplishment off of my TTDBID list (things to do before I die). I visited, and mounted an assault on the Great Wall of China.

I attacked the Wall with fervor and excitement and my lower body is crushed today as part of the aftermath. It was an amazing experience. The connection with our past and an icon of another time being shared with people from around the world was powerful.

Me, Some Aussies and our Muslim Friend after conquering the wall

But back to my point…the taste of success I have had in my personal and professional life has whetted my appetite for more. I just don’t know how to do it. I am quite proud to be working for the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the California University of Pennsylvania. I am also proud to represent my own brand that I share with all of you. I just don’t know how to get to the next step. I enjoy providing coaching to others in the industry to help them reach their goals and believe that I have done well helping others achieve. I also know that there is more ahead for me and more value that I will be able to offer others.

I just want to make sure you know that I don’t know what I am doing. I have a clear vision of where I want to go and the impact that I want to have on others. I just don’t know exactly how to get there yet. I feel like I could go on and on but to spare you I will try and curtail this Jerry Maguire moment and not give you my personal manifesto over this blog post.

Tommy boy after some bad pizza on the road

As Godin Writes “The only thing that makes people and organizations great is their willingness to not be great on the way. The desire to fail on the way to reaching a bigger goal is the untold secret of success.”

So, in case you didn’t know, which you probably did, I am not sure how to get where I want to go. I may very well know how to help you, and maybe that is how I get where I want to go…but my plan needs some refinement.

Thank you so much for your time. I truly hope you are invested in doing what you love to do and get to contribute positively to other people’s lives.

Goal setting can be a powerful exercise to help bring dreams to fruition. This post is a quick read on goal setting and I recommend doing some additional reading, watching and studying on this topic…but don’t wait! You can start today if you have never done this exercise or if it has been longer than 12 months since you have done so. Reworking your goals on a regular basis, quarterly say is a great idea and reviewing them daily is vital to reaching your goals.

Brain Tracy is one of my top choices for goal setting;

Les Brown-

The late Jim Rohn-

Matt Morris-

Tony Robbins-

The great Zig Zigglar rounds out my top 6.

The basics of goal setting are to follow the S.M.A.R.T. system. Goals should be;

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time Bound

Your goals should also be in line with your values, otherwise you will be fighting an internal battle against your progress. Goals should also provide a big enough target in the future to march towards and incremental steps to complete along the way. Tony Robbins talks about “chunking” goals or breaking them down into more manageable tasks that can be completed along the way. We should have a Jim Collins BHAG!

Big Hairy Audacious Goal!

The Hedgehog Principle

We should have something that we are internally inspired by and when we can find that thing that allows us to do what we are good at, do what we love and can make money with it…we are golden! then we end up going to life everyday instead of getting up and going to work.

I don’t want to slow you down…so if you have not done so start with these steps and remember to sate everything in the positive and present tense. Example “I am 9% body fat”.

1) make a list of everything that you want to have in the next 1-3-5 years. You can string this out to 10-20 years if you would like. This can be material things; cars, boats, houses, organic make up (my wife loves that stuff!) etc. This is your FUN list.

2) make a list of everything you want to do in the next 1-3-5 years. You can string this out to 10-20 years if you would like. This can be travel, community service, start a family, own a company, positions in a company, learning to swing dance, cure cancer, personal, professional or a mix. Some people like to have different lists for personal and professional, I like to put them all together.

3) make a list of everything you want to be in the next 1-3-5 years. You can string this out to 10-20 years if you would like. This can be a professional tittle, a corrective exercise specialist, head stylist, set of traits that will help you succeed or more. Becoming more will allow us to do, have and help more! Here we can outline exactly what that is; More confident, leaner, stronger, a stirring public speaker, a great parent, a difference make in the community…it is endless!!!!

Start here and we can talk about breaking these goals down into more manageable steps another time. Take action…now!!

As I get ready to run from the shuttle to the gate at Dulles International Airport in Washington DC I am reflecting on my day.

1:37 am go to bed after doing/folding laundry and cleaning pots and pans/loading/running dishwasher

Alarm goes off at 4:45 am

Get in my car and promptly break the switch that turns the headlights on/off for my car at 5:30 am
Frantically rush into house for pliers the barely manage to get the headlights on at 5:35 am

Pass through security at Logan Airport in Boston after being pulled out of line b/c I was going to miss my flight (do you believe the Thanksgiving travel has started already???) at 6:15 am

Board my 6:30 am flight at 6:23 am

Arrive in Dulles @ 9 am and make a 45 minute ride in 1 hour and 47 minutes with the help of my trusty rented Garmin GPS

Deliver my 11am-1pm presentation at Results: The Gym

Meet a friend for lunch at Mint in DC (Hi TC! Thanks for the AMAZING hospitality!)

Deliver my 5pm-7pm presentation at Results where I am told there is no way for me to make my 8:44 flight if I leave after 7…Exit the building rapidly when the fire alarm goes off and firefighters storm in at 6:47 pm

Break the speed limit several times and display my Boston driving skills to the residents of the DC metro area to arrive at security at 8:07pm for my 8:44pm flight
Am rescued again to get through security to get to the gate to realize the flight is at 8:55 pm(thank goodness!)

Land in Boston at 10:07 pm

Use my pliers to smash the plastic around my broken headlight switches so I can turn the lights on so I don’t get pulled over on the way to the hotel.

Now I need to drive to my hotel in Boston, check in, go to sleep and get up at 5:15 am for Day 1 of a 2 Day NASM workshop

Phew!

Good thing I love what I do! I met some cool people in DC and they want me to come back and deliver another staff presentation in February maybe.
Time to get off the plane.

Thanks for reading and love what you do!
