Well, I guess a book can’t win an Emmy but if you looking for a well written, evidence based report on diet and exercise, then check out my buddy Brent Brookbush’s new book “Fitness or Fiction: The Truth About Diet and Exercise.”

It’s well worth the $15 on Amazon and has good stuff in it for fitness professionals and those looking to learn more about diet and exercise and how they relate to your goals. Brent has poured of 6 years of effort into this book! It has been a labor of love and you will benefit from his efforts.

There is too much garbage and hype out there and this book will boil down what you can glean from research, not just opinion. Arm yourself with the knowledge in this text as it will come in handy with your clients or your own health and wellness program.

Celebrate Jack LaLane, Do Not Mourn His Loss, Rejoice in His Life

This is one of those times that people get sad when a great or significant person passes away when people seem sad and go into mourning. If this is a direct love one and you need to go through the grieving process, I understand, but when we are talking about health and fitness icon Jack LaLane who died peacefully in the presence of his family this past Sunday at the impressive age of 96, I think it is a time for a celebration of his life.

I am too young to have experienced most of Jack’s impact first hand. I merely get to enjoy the foundation he has laid and learn anecdotally about his life and accomplishments. Here are some of my favorite other Jacks are;

It was not just his amazing feats of fitness but his commitment to changing lives. He believed in helping people be the best they could through fitness. He achieved when he was told that he couldn’t. Success when so many thought he wouldn’t. He was called a quack and a nut job. He was doubted, challenged and disrespected. He rose above and lived his mission like no other. Thank you for the example Jack. You made the world a better place.

Disney Vacation Workout: Corrective Exercise on the Road

I am on my way back from (or just got back from-depending on when I finish this-my 4 year old is playing with his cars so I have a moment or 2 now) an amazing vacation. My wife and three children took our first family trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. It was the trip of a lifetime! The wonder, excitemet and magic in my kids eyes was priceless. I had to wake up early or stay up late to get this work in since I was enjoying the time with my family pretty
much every waking hour. I do my SMR / soft tissue work first followed by my static stretching for any muscles that are shortened. I typicaly do my core stabilization work next then any needed activation work. I have been utilizing some variations of some Yoga poses during my stretching sessions and have really enjoyed the benefits.

My best an biggest workout came while the wife and kids took a nap on a rainy afternoon. I got my rolling on while they were settling down then grabbed my bands as headed outside once they laid down for some zzzs.

I went out in the rain and did a total body workout with some Yoga and sprints. It was amazing to be outside and working out. It was refreshing especially after the rain stopped. I got a few strange looks from passers by like they were thinking “what is this nut doing? He’s going to get struck by lightening!”

It was peaceful by the riverside. There was a crane that stayed next to me the entire time, even during my sprints and dynamic flexibility. It felt great to take care of my body on the road during this hectic trip. It would have been easy to blow everything off and come back home feeling all tight and crummy but I am so glad that I didn’t. I didn’t over do it, but took car or myself to be able to feel good and move well. I felt like it kept my energy up too. I was pushing a double stroller full of 2 kids with bags draped over it and sometimes a third on my back. I needed to be up to the task. I enjoy active type of vacations and this sure was one. I walked and walked and walked in the Florida heat for hours a day and felt great, albeit sweaty.

So it is ok to unplug, step back and dial down, but take care of yourself to keep feeling great. I bet you enjoy your vacation even more.

To Washington D.C. and Back!

As I get ready to run from the shuttle to the gate at Dulles International Airport in Washington DC I am reflecting on my day.

1:37 am go to bed after doing/folding laundry and cleaning pots and pans/loading/running dishwasher

Alarm goes off at 4:45 am

Get in my car and promptly break the switch that turns the headlights on/off for my car at 5:30 am
Frantically rush into house for pliers the barely manage to get the headlights on at 5:35 am

Pass through security at Logan Airport in Boston after being pulled out of line b/c I was going to miss my flight (do you believe the Thanksgiving travel has started already???) at 6:15 am

Board my 6:30 am flight at 6:23 am

Arrive in Dulles @ 9 am and make a 45 minute ride in 1 hour and 47 minutes with the help of my trusty rented Garmin GPS

Deliver my 11am-1pm presentation at Results: The Gym

Meet a friend for lunch at Mint in DC (Hi TC! Thanks for the AMAZING hospitality!)

Deliver my 5pm-7pm presentation at Results where I am told there is no way for me to make my 8:44 flight if I leave after 7…Exit the building rapidly when the fire alarm goes off and firefighters storm in at 6:47 pm

Break the speed limit several times and display my Boston driving skills to the residents of the DC metro area to arrive at security at 8:07pm for my 8:44pm flight
Am rescued again to get through security to get to the gate to realize the flight is at 8:55 pm(thank goodness!)

Land in Boston at 10:07 pm

Use my pliers to smash the plastic around my broken headlight switches so I can turn the lights on so I don’t get pulled over on the way to the hotel.

Now I need to drive to my hotel in Boston, check in, go to sleep and get up at 5:15 am for Day 1 of a 2 Day NASM workshop

Phew!

Good thing I love what I do! I met some cool people in DC and they want me to come back and deliver another staff presentation in February maybe.
Time to get off the plane.
