Happy Tuesday!

I now have the privilege of uploading videos to YouTube that are longer than 15 minutes. I am guessing that I have passed a certain number of uploads and maintained a positive status with You Tube. So basically I have not uploaded any iphone videos of a Bruins broadcast or anything like that. I did recently post a series of videos on You Tube giving a basic overview of the OPT Model over the course of five videos. Visit my YouTube channel if you want to see them http://youtube.com/theericbeard. You probably notice that I have been investing my time outside of my blog lately I logged in last week to post and spent an hour fixing the typos in my last post. Sheesjh! What a stinker! My apologies for letting that go out. The content was good but what a mess! So that is fit for public consumption and worth a peak when you have time

More importantly is that I uploaded an entire DVD of mine to You Tube. It is finishing processing right now. The DVD is actually the prologue installment for my DVD series Secrets and Staples of Training the Athletic Shoulder. (of course available at http://athleticshoulder.com ) it is 54 minutes long and has some greta stuff in it if I do say so myself. Please watch it and let me know what you think! I am confident that you will find it helpful.

I have attended the ACSM Summit in the past, but this was my first time presenting there. It was 100% my pleasure to deliver the presentation Corrective Exercise for Shoulder Impairments with Patricia “Skippy” Mattson

Skippy is an ATC/PT at the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta and works mostly with high level young athletes.

She is swimmer herself and involved with the High Performance USA Swimming Team. She has over 30 years of in the trenches experience, is a blast to teach with and feisty to boot:) We had communicated via email and telephone to get our presentation together, only having met in person about 3 hours before our first presentation! She was so easy to work with, a real joy and fountain of information. We had about 85 people in our first lecture and over 100 at the second delivery. The second time we presented was at 6:15 on a Friday night…talk about a tough time slot! But people packed in and sat on the floor and were in the hall way to hear what we had to say. We went in depth covering anatomy, impairments, movement assessments and corrective exercise strategies. The groups were very responsive and laughed and had fun while they learned! At least two students came to both lectures (even though they were exactly the same!) because they liked it so much!

Healthy Learning also video taped the presentation and it will be available for sale soon. just like they did at IDEA for me last year with;

Skippy and I connected with a group of kinesiology students and faculty at the Summit and were graciously invited to their reception dinner on Friday night

We sat with the students and talked about their plans for the future and their experience at the Summit. There were 6 students at my table, 5 juniors who were all coming back to graduate at Penn State next year and 1 senior who was headed of to get her Doctorate in Physical Therapy after her graduation this spring. I did not get to speak with the other 15 students or so because I had to run (literally!) to the airport to catch my flight home. It was very gracious of them to invite us! Thank you Lori and Michelle!

I also had the privilege to introduce and assist a good friend and colleague of mine, and creator of the Rollaxer product, Scott Mitchell.

www.rollaxer.net

It is worth checking out the link, if I HAD to choose only one myofascial release product…this would be IT!

Here is a picture of Scott and his wife…

Scott delivered a presentation entitled “Knot So Stressed” which covered myofasical release and corrective exercise. he did an awesome job! over 200 people attended his two lectures combined!

On top of all this Scott and I got to see an Atlanta Thrashers game!

They were down 4-1 and came back to win 5-4 in a shootout! We had great seats and lots of fun! They played the NY Rangers so there were plenty of New Yorkers there and I got heckled all night for my Red Sox shirt that I had on. Love the Yankees fans!

Thanks for reading!

Tennis elbow is also a common diagnosis for tennis players and also an overuse injury. Where does tennis elbow come from? The elbow? Interesting that one study indicated that 64% of those who were diagnosed with tennis elbow also had a shoulder injury….hmmmm.

According to Wikipedia;

Tennis elbow is a condition where the outer part of the elbow becomes painful and tender. It’s a condition that is commonly associated with playing tennis, though the injury can happen to almost anybody.[1]

The condition is more formally known as lateral epicondylitis (“inflammation to the outside elbow bone”)[2], lateral epicondylosis, or simply lateral elbow pain.

You could shoot yourself up with cortisone once every couple of months for a year like this guy did to treat his tennis elbow (obviously don’t do that unless you are a licensed professional)…

…or you could try and prevent it or treat it alternatively. Your choice.

Question; during which aspect of the game of tennis is one most likely to injure their shoulder?

a) backhand strokes
b) forehand strokes
c) serving
d) during dynamic flexibility drills in the warm-up

What is your answer?
