I literally had 10 minutes at the gym yesterday. This included changing out of my snow boots and winter gear. So really I was left with five minutes. I coach hockey for both of my boys teams and had some shoveling to do and wanted to move well and feel good throughout. What did I do? Well I did cheat and use a foam roller (my orange Grid at home for 2-3 minutes to mobilize my thoracic spine.

I threw my sneakers on and went over the TRX and did some rows , I only got 4 reps in before a trainer running a bootcamp class gave me the boot. So on to the Vertex. Vibration training is a huge advantage when you are short on time. I proceeded to performa circuit of slow tempo push ups, bird dogs and double kneeling, Y-T-A’s from a hip hinges position. The settings on Vertex where 30 seconds per interval, 50 hertz and low amplitude. I was able to get in three cycles with 90 seconds on each cycle then I had to through the snow gear back on and head home to get my youngest to the rink.

Short, frequent bouts of core stability or rehabilitation style of exercises can be very beneficial to maintain or enhance neural activation of inhibited muscles and groove quality movement patterns. I would have liked to add in some integration type movements like walking lunges, but a few laps around the ice rink would have to suffice.

I chose the push up so I could load the anterior chain while engaging my glutes to maintain a straight alignment, plus I wanted to get the upper body some pushing work and the rotator cuff stimulation on the Vertex is great. Push Up Video

The birddogs are a classic selection for core stability from the lumbar multifidi to the internal oblique, glutes and transverse abdominus integration. The movement of the opposite hip and shoulder helps to enhance the force closure mechanism to stabilize the sacroiliac joint. I also like the lower trap and posterior rotator cuff work from the scaption movement and gleno-humeral external rotation.

I finished with what I termed a kneeling Y-T-A from a hip hinge. Imagine kneeling ona vibration platform, starting in this position and performing Y-T-A’s (cobras, rear delt flys and scaptions). This loads the glutes heavily and gets some good work to the para-scapualr musculature. YTAs on HFPN (or Ball Combo 1)

I felt great after this circuit and was ready to work out for sure! It definitely helped to get the right muscles firing before and active day. Hope your winter is coming right along!

So this guy who I am an acquaintance of, actually we have just played hockey together a couple of times, comes up to me at the gym and asks for “some advice”. Then he clarifies and asks me for “some exercises to help this?” and pulls up his sock to show me this

So, can you fox this?

He was a few months out from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles Tendon. Why is everyone always looking for a quick fix? I guess I do too, I am only human…but to expect a couple of exercises to break open his rehab was a bit much. My question to him was “have you been discharged from physical therapy?” Of course he hadn’t been discharged yet, in fact I knew one of the two PTs that were treating him. I asked what they were having him do…I got the typical response of “Some of these and some of these…and I think there was something else. ” It’s probably like when someone tries to tell you what their IT guy said about their broken computer. “The server was down, and it’s a good thing it wasn’t my motherboard and I need to make sure that I don’t click on any links with suggestive words in them or something.”

My suggestion was to follow the program that his PTs put together because all too often people tend to collect additions to their rehab program and end up over-doing it by either doing too much too soon or by executing the exercises poorly. It turns out that Achilles Man had in fact done just that last month and his ankle swelled up on him and he couldn’t walk for a day or so.

We all want to help others and we like to look like the hero, but sometimes the right thing to say is “nothing”. Follow directions. Keep working. Be consistent. Actually do your homework. Don’t look for the quick fix exercise or treatment. It probably doesn’t exist.

Can I drink this and not have to stretch?

It has been too long my friends! Too long to properly update you on my goings on, here are my past three plus months in a nutshell

Eric Beard's Life in a Nutshell

I gave presentations at the NEHRSA Fall Conference, TSI Summit and went to China for 10 days and worked with top junior tennis players and coaches. I had some interesting food in China including pigeon and seahorse soup…yum.

Who Doesn't Like Pigeon?Okay, i get Pigeon Soup...but Seahorse and Pigeon Soup?

My time on the road was amazing and I met some wonderful and inspiring professionals. I enjoyed delivering presentations titled “Save Your Back: Get Your Butt in Gear” (which I gave at the IDEA World Show and Perform Better Functional Training Summits in Providence and Chicago), “Real World Dynamic Flexibility Progressions” and “Corrective Exercise for Shoulder Impairments”.

I just accepted a new position with NASM as well, the Director of Advanced Education. I look forward to new challenges in 2012 for sure.

The holidays were priceless with my wife and children and Santa even brought me some Under Armour Socks and the Star Wars Force Unleashed game for Nintendo Wii.

FunnyThat my 8 year old son was off the charts excited that I got this...

I have listened to Jim Fanin’s 90 Second Rule audio program and started the workbook and have dabbled in some older programs that I enjoyed. I reviewed my personal goals and family goals from 2011 and set some new ones for 2012. We are looking forward to a year of growth and positive change.

I have used Darin Hardy’s “Design Your Best Year Ever” program fro my goal setting again this year and am committed to utilizing it even more.

I have come up with the daily 30-30-30=90 goal for myself. My target is to invest 30 minutes in each of the following three categories with the total target time of 90 minutes a day; Physiology (positive inout) {+}, Anatomy (movement/exercise) {M} and Methods {->}(tactics/techniques and strategies). I want to invest in myself and as Jim Rohn has suggested many times over, work harder on yourself than on your job. The last three days turned out like this;

+    M   ->

30-90-0 = 120

0-10-180=190

45-60-0=105

Not exactly balanced, but I have been investing more than 90 minutes a day into myself. If I can keep that up for a year…look out!!! What are your goals? What are you tracking? This daily investment will contribute to my larger goals. I need to become more and operate at a higher level to reach the targets that I want to reach for my family and I. 30+30+30 does not equal 90…the results will be exponential!

Remember the old adage, inspect what you expect!

Here’s to a miraculous 2012!

What an awesome month!

After I delivered the keynote presentation at the NEHRSA Spring Conference on May 19th at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Casino in CT I taught a workshop the next two days for NASM in downtown Boston. I had a week in the “office” then I was off to present at the Perform Better Functional Training Summit in Providence, RI for the first time. My session was broken into a lecture for @ 90 minutes and hands on for @ 90 minutes and it was titled “Save Your Back: Get You Butt in Gear.” The gist was that people don’t move enough and when they do move, they don’t use their glutes and are missing a keystone to lumbo-pelvic stability and locomotion. I was representing NASM and discussing their four step Corrective Exercise Continuum. I was fortunate enough to take in several other presentations throughout the weekend, and partake in an amazing barbeque at Chris Poirrier’s house.

My family and I took a killer 7 day vacation to Walt Disney World in Florida. Loved it! Memories that will last for ever. I got to go on the Aerosmith Rocking Roller Coaster…man that thing was fast! It was a blast!

I have been slammed helping to launch a product for NASM and haven’t even had time to blog or make any videos. I did have time to make it to the Bruins Stanley Cup Victor Parade last Saturday though!!! YES!!!! I will post some pictures. I go some great ones of Tim Thomas and Zdeno Chara with the Cup. I also found time Sunday on Father’s Day to do some work setting up a new kids swing-set that we got. I had to move some old curbs that we had around our driveway and do some landscaping on top of repairing the swing-set. We got it used from some friends and it needed a little work. I tell ya, I am all set not doing any strongman training. Moving those curbs was enough for me.

Now I am back at it at the Perform Better Functional Training Summit in Chicago. I went through Grey Cook’s pre-con offering today which was good. He made a reference to NASM’s overhead squat assessment and said that it wasn’t enough to look at just one movement. I agree. Looking at all aspects of the kinetic chain, in different planes, in isolation and integration really rounds things out. What we teach in the Corrective Exercise Specialist workshop for NASM helps to bring this approach to life, covering different versions of the over head squat, single leg squat and insight towards assessing other movements. it’s impossible to keep up with what everyone else is doing, that’s why I enjoy these shows. I am pretty sure that most big names in the fitness industry do not understand the subtleties and flexibility of NASM’s OPT Model. I see more similarities in the industry than differences. NASM’s model just gives you a tidy system to plug all of that fun stuff into.

I enjoyed Thomas Myers at the Providence show and will repeat at least one of his talks this weekend as well. I also took in Dr. Stuart McGill a couple of times, Mark Verstegn once and poked my head in a few other sessions. Verstegen gave a good talk on barefoot training and was featuring Addidas’s new “barefoot trainer.” Dr. McGill talked about working with back pain as well as with powerful athletes. Myers gave an intro to his Anatomy Trains concept and went trough some actual hands on techniques in his second talk. I did see Grey here too and he did some good bits on movement screens and corrective work for the upper body.

I have more to share about these shows, but I was literally up all night last night packing and finishing up some work and I am dragging!

Hope you are having an awesome early summer!

A Shot of the MGM Grand at Foxwoods when I arrived

The MGM Grand at Foxwoods is a beautiful hotel and the conference was great as NEHRSA conferences usually are. Never mind that this was my first keynote presentation! I was honored to be selected for this opportunity. The crowd seemed to enjoy the talk and I know that it was an unforgettable experience for me.

I got to grab some snacks at Whole Foods (which I love!) a couple of times this week and got a kick out of this new water I saw, the call it how I say it lol!

Finally someone spells it right!

I also lead a 2 day workshop for NASM in Boston and was blessed with an awesome group of trainers.

We had over 30 people in the group and they did a great job!

On Friday night I had some time to myself and took in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on an IMAX screen in 3D.

I have enjoyed the Pirates’ franchise so far and liked this installment too. It was so long that my nose was sore by the end from wearing the 3D glasses. The movie was two hours and twenty one minutes plus advertisements previews. If you go, stay all the way past the credits for a hint into Pirates 5! I won’t give it away, and it’s just a quick clip, but if you are a fan, you will want to see it.

Sunday was busy too. We are doing some landscaping/yard work and it required taking down an old fence that had some metal poles holding it up that were cemented into the ground. I have to dig them up, pry bar them out and sledge hammer them apart.

Forget hitting a tire, try busting concrete!

I got a heck of a workout! I enjoy physical work, but am glad that I do not have to do hard physical labor for my full time job. I am going to be sore tomorrow:) I’m also glad that I bought a tend pound sledge instead of a 20 pounder…that would have messed me up! I of course did some self myofascial release, thoracic spine mobilization and core activation before hand:)

I hope you all had an awesome week and have an even better one lined up!

Thanks for reading!

Happy Thursday night!

It seems that I don’t usually get to posting on Thursday nights, but I’d like to get more regular with my blog. And no not to talk about increasing my fiber intake. I don’t have a video to share this week just some insights. (actually I just uploaded one for the edit!!) I have a client that I’ve been working with, who is a seventy-year-old avid tennis player. She is very open-minded to alternative treatments takes very good care of herself. And has recently been receiving physical therapy, stretch therapy, neuromuscular massage therapy, and seeing a chiropractor, for a shoulder injury. She had an MRI to quantify the damage to the shoulder and she’s laid off from tennis to let her shoulder heal. Actually she hasn’t laid off from playing tennis. She’s only playing left-handed now, and she’s the a right-handed player. Talk about dedication to tennis!

This woman has received acupuncture, used homeopathic remedies and mixed these approaches to health care with traditional medicine. Pretty much the perfect client. haven’t actually work with her for a few years but she’s back to see me to help with her shoulder. When I started to ask her about the treatment she’d been receiving, I was pretty happy. It sound like a good mix of therapies the compliment each other well. Once I performed some movement assessments, goniometry measurements, (specific joint range of motion assessments) and manual muscle testing, I found that there were several other areas throughout the kinetic chain contributing to her shoulder injury. I was a bit disappointed that none of the other practitioners that she was seeing were addressing these other areas. It sounded like the work they were doing was appropriate for shoulder, but the rest of the kinetic chain is not being considered. She had restrictions in dorsiflexion flexion, left sacroiliac joint dysfunction and other soft tissue restrictions. Just by releasing her left adductor magnus, left short head of the biceps femoris and encouraging some movement in her sacroiliac joint, she instantaneously stood taller and moved easier. She was excited and relieved that her whole body felt better. It always amazes me the, complexity yet simplicity of the kinetic chain principle. It’s true that sometimes we can’t see the forest through the trees, and I have made this mistake myself plenty of times. So the good news is is that this client will coming to see me for some soft tissue work and very specific corrective exercise programming to address her movement impairments and she will continue to see her other practitioners for localize work at the site of her injury. This is almost the best case scenario we have a specific diagnosis and qualified practitioners treating the diagnosis as well if someone else looking at the big picture. Now at 70 years of age playing as much tennis as this client is played, degradation of tissue is unavoidable. I’m not saying a the SI joint restriction caused her shoulder problem. It might even just be a response to the injury itself. I’m very clear however that does need to be addressed. And if we think about the fascial connections in the posterior chain of the body, the sacroiliac joint dysfunction and right shoulder dysfunction are not uncommon in this situation. We can extrapolate that further restrictions in dorsi flexion bilaterally as well as first MTP joint restriction bilaterally have contributed to her dysfunction as well.

I’m excited to get this client back on the court and playing tennis again…with the racket in her right hand. I’m not sure how long it’s going to take, but I know her love of the game will keep her moving consistently toward that court again.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced situations where other practitioners have get lost in the minutia of the condition. As corrective exercise specialists and personal trainers, we work with our strengths of just looking at human movement. We can’t diagnose, many of us can’t apply manual therapy techniques unless we are licensed to do so, but we can observe and identify movement impairments. We can restore muscular balance. We can activate inhibited muscles. We can teach quality movement patterns. We can make a huge difference. We can do so along with other practitioners who have the appropriate licensure and skill set to identify and treat specific injuries. or we can use this skill set skill set with someone who doesn’t have a diagnosed injury to enhance the quality of life, performance on the court or play time with their kids.

There are so many other people that we can learn from to get better at what we do. There are countless practitioners we can network with to learn more about the body. Just remember that human movement is human movement, and the kinetic chain is the kinetic chain. These basics will guide us in identification of dysfunction reeducation of the neuromuscular system, fitness programs and athletic performance enhancement programs.

That’s all for me tonight. Thanks for reading and here is to to a dry and sunny spring!

I enjoy being optimistic and catch myself operating from that frame of reference. I have spent a good amount of my life with a negative bias and still find things that leave a bad taste in my mouth from time to time now. More often than not however, I choose to look at the glass 1/2 full. The media’s attachment onto this story may just have been for ratings and the reporter that “broke” this story was doing his job and looking for something to get him attention, but I can’t help but feel good about it. It brought a smile to my heart and almost a tear to my eye.

We are all in the need for a second chance in life, most of us will need many more chances than that so it was nice to see this homeless man in Columbus Ohio get his. He has been no angel in his life with addictions to alcohol and drugs in his past but his persistence and twist of fate have provided him opportunities that he has probably never even dreamed of. Word has it that he will accept an offer to become the voice of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in addition to appearing on the Today shows and several other job offers.

As a child of 2 smokers, I always hated cigarette smoke. The smell of it has always made me sick, sick with disgust. I hated those days of being enveloped in a cloud of what smelled like death to me. Truth be told, I was not far from the truth. I have even had personal training clients come to their sessions having just finished a cigarette in their car on the way to the gym…(insert deep breath and exhale). It always boggled me, but I tried to be empathetic and understand that the addiction was powerful and I never experienced it so I could not l know what they were going through. Smoking is still a significant problem in the world, even in sophisticated countries like the Unites States of America.

Cigarette Smoking Statistics

In the United States, an estimated 24.8 million men (23.1 percent) and 21.1 million women (18.3 percent) are smokers. These people are at higher risk of heart attack and stroke. * National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 2008, National Center for Health Statistics.

Smoking has been linked to several serious medical conditions such as strokes. I have had people in may family, who smoked, have strokes. It has been pretty tough on everyone, not just the patient.

Stroke killed 137,119 people in 2006. It’s the third largest cause of death, ranking behind “diseases of the heart” and all forms of cancer. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States.

Experts think that more explicit warnings will deter people from purchasing and using cigarettes and other tobacco products. “”Some very explicit, almost gruesome pictures may be necessary,” FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in an interview with the Associated Press. “This is a very, very serious public health issue, with very, very serious medical consequences,” such as cancer, heart disease, strokes and lung diseases.”

I have travelled overseas and I laugh to myself when I see the warning signs on the cigarette boxes “Smoking causes cancer and may kill you.” It does not get much more clear than that. If they think dead bodies will stop the addiction to the drug nicotine and the act of smoking, I think they are wrong. Who knows maybe it will deter a handful of people from ever trying smoking, and if that is the case, the campaign will have been successful.
