Springfield College, Exercise Physiology, Corrective Exercise for Rotator Cuff Injuries, Stomach Flu and Stuff

I was asked to speak to a group of Exercise Physiology Students at my Alma Matter Springfield College last night. It was my third time returning to the campus to speak to current students and I am flattered each time. It came at a rough time as a stomach “bug” has been going through my house for the last week and a half and I am still in pretty rough shape. I made a commitment to be there and did not want to cancel on them so I toughed it out and made the hour and fifteen minute drive to campus to deliver the presentation.

The group was made of about 1/3 seniors, 1/3 juniors, 1/3 sophomores and a lone freshman. I was asked by Dr.Rich Wood, a professor in the SC Ex. Pys department and old college hockey teammate, to talk about shoulder impairments and rotator cuff injuries, professional development and my journey so far in this industry. The instant feedback was great and several of the students inquired about internship opportunities over the next 12 months.

I discussed the interconnectedness of the kinetic chain and how our body is a unique and adaptable organism. We discussed the impact that the chair borne society has on our posture and musculoskeletal injuries such as rotator cuff injuries. I reviewed the different joints that make up the shoulder complex; the gleno-humeral joint, acromio-clavicular joint, sterno-clavicular joint and scapulo-thoracic joint.

We had an interesting discussion about which section of the spine (cervical, thoracic and lumbar) has the greatest impact on the function of the shoulder complex and touch on why rotator cuff injuries are often a symptom, not a cause of the problem.

I threw in a great thoracic mobilization technique to wrap this portion of the talk up and went on to discuss goal setting and identifying one’s true passion and the fact that “you can have anything that you want in life if you help enough other people get they want”. That is a great quote from Zig Zigglar.

Hopefully I help them open their eyes to the importance of goal setting and being clear on what drives you. These can keep you moving in the right direction when things are dark and challenging and propel you to success. I am still pretty wiped out so that’s it for tonight!
