I&#8217;m going to summarize my notes from the presentations I attended while in Chi-Town. Not only was it a blast to deliver &#8220;Save Your Back: Get Your Butt in Gear!&#8221; on Sunday but I was able to see several presentations as well. Between the Providence show and Chicago show I took in a number of talks and got to talk to several of the speakers outside of the conference. I have to tell you that each person that I talked to was friendly, engaging and humble. What an excellent group. The Perform Better staff is equally as amazing! These guys and gals really roll out the red carpet for customers, conference presenters and conference attendees alike.<br />

<p>At the conference I ran into a handful of students from workshops that I have lead over the years, a friend that used to work with me in Colorado and the Strength Coach of the Buffalo Bills who I played football with at Springfield College. It&#8217;s such a small industry!</p>
<p>Want to see something cool? A college track athlete came to see me wanting to get back into training for their event. Imagine trying to run on a heel that sits like this?<br />

Their movement assessment was pretty good, but there were some core stability and shoulder issues to go along with the foot/ankle impairment. I did some manual therapy and then some corrective work for the foot/ankle, core and shoulder. The client reports being able to run longer and train harder. They still have a ways to go. </p>

<p>I am watching The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise as I tidy up a few loose ends, procrastinate before packing (as opposed to procrastinating after ding something) and contemplating a late night roller blading journey.</p>
<p>I love this movie and have seen it a handful of times. Makes me want to go live in the middle of nowhere and live off of the land, such an honorable life. The dedication to the collective, traditions and dedication to mastering even the most mundane tasks is amazing to me.<br />

<p>I was on the road 11 days out of 21 from the end of July to the first week of August and have enjoyed the last 2 weekends at home for sure. I spent some time in an small Integrated Manual Therapy workshop with NASM CEO Dr. Michael Clark in Mesa, AZ which was just amazing! Thanks Mike!!! We studied assessment and treatment of the pelvic girdle. I have been able to provide relief for so many of my clients since applying this information.</p>

I did stop by the IDEA World 2010 Awards Ceremony in LA as well. Two friends of mine, Tanya Colucci and Lance Breger, were nominated for co-directors of the year. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This girl was a participant at a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) that I taught for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) in Calabasas, CA last week. I used a modified version of the overhead squat and goniometry to identify that a movement impairment stemming from the ankle was driving this compensation. She had 5 degrees of dorsiflexion in her right ankle and 10 degrees of dorsiflexion in her left ankle. We need 12 degrees of dorsiflexion to stand with the lumbo-pelvic hip complex aligned in neutral and 15 degrees to walk with proper alignment of the proximal kinetic chain. Athletes, especially those like tennis players, soccer players and basketball players who require multi-directional movements will ideally have up to 20 degrees.</p>

<p>Had a fun first day at the Boston workshop today. I stayed after and worked on a dancer and did a few overhead squat assessments (ACL surgeries, car accidents and scoliosis).</p>
<p>Here is the treatment protocol that O followed for one;<br />
Worked on a young female dancer after NASM CPT class today in Boston-<br />
She had left medial knee pain<br />
OHS-low back arch, excessive forward lean,<br />
Released (inhibited) -Vastus lateralis, TFL, Biceps femoris (short head),<br />
Stretched (lengthened) -TFL/ITB,<br />
Activated-VMO Glute Medius,<br />
Integration-BW squats, lots of cuing on loading the hips with a neutral L-P-H-C<br />
Now moving much better! No pain after treatment.</p>

<p>He needs me to tear into that ankle and get things moving! He needs some deep tissue work for sure and yes the hip and shoulder are not far behind, but he seems to have issues from the ground up from repeated ankle sprains and peroneal strains. I hope to help him find a physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist or corrective exercise specialist that is licensed to perform manual therapy to help him out.</p>
<p>Well&#8230;couple of invites to send out for HFPN then time for my workout!</p>

<p>So when most people are concerned about holidays and shopping I am worried about our friend The Grinch. I mean he needs some love too. Who is teaching him to do his foam rolling/SMR and activation techniques? It is certainly not Cindy Lou Who.</p>

<p>So find The Grinch in your life and help them. We all have that grumpy person, client, loved one in our lives that is banged up with poor posture and they need some help. This is the time of year to reach out to them. That is really the spirit of the season. You can rejoice in the religious origins of the Christmas Season or the over-bearing commercialism of this time of year, even the winter solstice.</p>
<p>It doesn&#8217;t matter what you celebrate, just amplify the spirit of the season. Smile more, be kinder to others, stay positive and be more generous. It is about giving to others, not just physical gifts, but gifts of joy and personality. Share who you are and your gifts. That is what I like best about the holiday season. It provides the excuse to be nice and helpful, to be more concerned with others than ourselves. We may carry ourselves like this year round, but the extra incentive is nice. Life brings us challenges and it is easy to get down. Use this time of year to re-focus on others and the opportunity to help and contribute to others.</p>
<p>So The Grinch does need some corrective exercise and postural work, but the big picture is we should give to people unconditionally, regardless of the facade they put on.</p>
