I shot this at NASM corporate after teaching a corrective exercise specialist workshop in January 2010. NASM.org and HFPN.com share an exercise library with other ideas as well. I wish I had more time to do these videos, there is so much more to cover. If you are looking for more ideas for training the shoulder complex you can check out my video series Secrets and Staples of Training the Athletic Shoulder at http://athleticshoulder.com . This is a 5 disc series that I am pretty proud of. Lots of content! Truly soups to nuts training for the shoulder complex.

Are you guys registered yet for HFPN’s Another Fitness Challenge (AFC)? Visit http://anotherfitnesschallenge.com to get in while the getting is good. I can’t wait! I am going to use the AFC to reach some personal goals and offer some goal setting coaching and moving towards reaching your goals. Will be a fun ride! Register now, it’s free and you could win some cool stuff:) http://anotherfitnesschallenge.com to

Back to the Grammy’s! Beyonce finally beat Taylor Swift with a Grammy for Single Ladies and just tore it up on stage with a pretty cool mash up with her stuff and an Alanis Morisette cover!

This man changed my life and thousands of people’s lives world wide. He will be missed. This clip is from Jim Rohn’s website.

The Passing of a Legend

With great sadness we share that Jim Rohn, our mentor and friend, left us December 5, 2009 for a better place.

Over the past 18 months, in his battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, Jim assured us with a smile that all is good, that he would fight until the last breath, yet he had no fear as to what would be next. Jim’s faith was as much a part of his life as his desire to inspire and challenge us all to be the best we could be and to live our dreams.

Jim’s courage in his final months and days were a testament to his message that we should all fight the good fight. He never gave up and never gave in.

Jim Rohn touched millions of lives over the past 46 years through his seminars, books, articles and CDs. He always stayed long after an event to shake hands, take pictures and sign autographs. He loved making a difference in people’s lives, that was his passion and inspiration. Yet he was also a private man who kept a small, loyal and caring inner circle. He was a tremendous friend to those who knew him.

Harold Dyke, long time close friend of Jim’s for over 55 years said it best, “As Jim is ending one life he is simultaneously being birthed into a new life. One that he has talked about over the years and anticipated with great joy in his last remaining days.”

Kyle Wilson, long time colleague and friend of Jim had this to say about his mentor, “Jim Rohn was a great human being. Jim had the rare ability to take any concept or idea and then frame it in such a way that the rest of us could see it more clearly. His wisdom and insights positively affected everyone he touched on some level and to so many of us it was in an extraordinary way. But even more impressive was Jim Rohn the man. He possessed style and charisma, yet was humble, kind and understated to all who knew him. I find myself every day reflecting, benefiting and passing on the wisdom and ideas that are rooted in Jim’s message and wisdom. Jim is irreplaceable on every level. I will miss him beyond words, but am comforted as I know he was, that his message and legacy will live on and positively change millions of lives over the years to come!”

Someone once said “when you are born you enter the world crying while everyone else is rejoicing and when you die hopefully you have lived such a life that everyone will be crying while you are rejoicing”. Jim Rohn lived such a life.

These are some great videos of Mr. Rohn.

Happy Friday all!

I am enjoying a High Protein Mocha Almond Smoothie from Smoothie King in Atlanta. I love Smoothie King! I think they do a pretty good job with variety and quality of products. I think that IntaJuice may have a healthier product line but I do not see the around too often. It was good regardless…I am wondering if they actually poured coffee into my smoothie? I hope not! It is 8:23 pm and I do not want to be up all night, oh well! I should have asked. I was just too hungry and needed something quick.

I had a pretty good workout. Many of the Double Tree Hotels have deal with Precor and have decent workout facilities. I did my foam rolling and then SMR with the Rollaxer (http://rollaxer.net), static stretching, (corrective exercise) core stability work, balance work, legs and a couple of sets of biceps and triceps. I have trained arms only 3 or 4 times all year (and it shows lol!).

I am in town teaching an Essentials of Personal Training workshop for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM.org) with my buddy Rob Rettmann. We have a good group and are having fun.

I had a couple of good talks with Scott Pullen of NASM and DotFit (http://dotfit.com) and Wendy Batts of NASM and The Health and Fitness Providers Network (http://hfpn.com) and the functionality and our plans for the HFPN site. We look for big things within our prospective networks.

Specifically I was talking with Wendy about a webinar on HFPN sometime before Halloween. I had a few ideas for topics for my A-Teamers…do you have any requests?

Let me know and I might be able to put it together in time, if not I have a few things up my sleeve. I am sitting at Smoothie King right now, they have 3 Macs set up for customers…they are NICE!!! I need to upgrade my lap top soon.

Anyhow..I need to get back to the hotel, I need to put together an email for a Level 2 Kettlebell and Corrective Exercise Workshop that Jen Brickey and I are putting on on 10/24/09 from 9:30 am-1:30 pm at the Manchester Athletic Club on Atwater Ave in Manchester Be The Sea, MA. Only $100!!!! NSCA credits for sure, maybe NASM Let me know if you want to know more about it. We are putting together a Facebook Event and I will put it up on my blog here as well. there have been solid responses to the Level 1 we have put on twice this year, we look forward to Level 2 with some great stuff! Jen will just be back from an RKC event and will be all fired up I am sure.

Hmmm…I just remembered I had a 2 ounce shot of wheat grass…I am a sucker for this place! Do you think wheat grass is a scam? Let me know with a a comment below…Happy Friday!

I know it feels nice to let your feet breathe on hot days and you just could not resist the new pair designer pair of sandals that Jessica Simpson had on in US Magazine..but just about everybody that I see over-pronates and that thin little piece of rubber is not going to give the support needed as you walk down a paved road or brave the Subway in Manhattan (“ewww” in open toed sandals by the way). I am seeing way too much eversion and the poor transverse arch is just getting crushed due to muscular imbalances and proximal weakness (core stabilizers and especially the glute complex). I wonder how tired these sandal wearers are at the end of the day? They are not using their active system to propel then through the gate cycle but slogging along by dissipating forces through their passive systems. Very inefficient and a good way to put unwanted stress on the knees and low back.

Save the flip-flops and sandals for the beach or a date where you will not be walking very much. Get yourself some supportive footwear to help support your body and stop beating in your knees and low back.

I can hear it now…”But what about barefoot training? And developing the musculature of the foot and all of the proprioceptors that get dumbed down from shoes and sneakers(tennis shoes for my Midwest and southern friends: ?”

The Kinesis Sytem The "Original Movement"

I am not talking about training for a short period of time with little impact (think Yoga or Kinesis vs. Step Aerobics). Unless you have been running barefoot since you were 3, your body probably can’t handle running barefoot now. The human foot is an amazing and resilient structure but it was designed for “grassy savanahs” Thank you Dr. Laitman!) not cement sidewalks. I am all for teaching the body to do what it is SUPPOSED to do, but our environment is mostly artificial (think sitting and sidewalks) and we must support our body as such.

“But Eric Cressey trains barefoot sometimes!” I do too, but we don’t run on cement and we do not allow uncontrolled pronation of the kinetic chain. This is evidenced at the foot and ankle complex as eversion of the calcaneous, abduction of the foot and dorsiflexion-which most people don’t have so the flattening of the foot and adduction of the knee becomes more pronounced.

Do you think that we do our corrective work as well? You bethca’. We do not go from 8 hours at a desk and two 45 minute commutes to whipping our shoes off and doing plyometrics or jogging on the grass. We follow the corrective process and are dedicated to preparation and recovery. The average person who is on the barefoot kick simply believe that removing a Jimmy Choo will transform their nervous system, cure their back pain and melt off the pounds.

Great for a date, horrible for posture and alignment

Enjoy the rest of your summer..just wear some sneakers around town and save the flip-flops for the beach:)

Thanks for reading.

I was on the road again this weekend after a great Corrective Exercise Specialist Workshop in New York City last weekend I taught a Certified Personal Trainer Workshop in Bloomington, MN. I had not been to Minnesota for about two years and was looking forward to the trip. I has stayed in Minneapolis a couple of times, but this was my first visit to the Bloomington area right next to the airport and the “Mall”.

The Mall of America, Bloomington, MN

The Mall of America was right across he parking lot from the Marriott that I stayed in, a quick walk or even quicker shuttle ride. I had heard stories about the shear immensity of the Mall and wanted to see it for myself.

SHARK!!!

I was greeted by an 8 foot shark cage and an exhibit put on by the Aquarium in the mall…yes, it has it’s own aquarium.

Okay...so this is bigger than the Natick Mall...and it has it's own amusement park and Aquarium...WOW!

Next, I walked into the center of the mall and saw them amusement park….this picture shows maybe a third of it. I wanted to take a run on the roller coaster, but found myself with a full stomach every time that I had the chance and thought better of it. It has been years since I have been on a roller caster, it would have been fun. They have gotten much more complicated and crazier than the old wooden up and down the hill and around the corner originals.

The PGA people thought I was a golfer or a caddy and were trying to check me in when I was checking out their set up...must have been the NASM polo shirt!

The Marriott that I stayed at and taught the workshop at played host to media, caddies, a few pros and colf course managers from across the country. I was almost handed a registration packet and VIP access to a PGA reception at the hotel:) Little do they know I have not played a round of golf in 7 years and I was ugly then. Can’t imagine what I would look like on the course now. I did miss the chance to find that out as my hockey team had the first annual Pittbull Golf and family Outing while I was away. Maybe next year!

I enjoyed teaching the workshop and was able to share some exciting news about NASM PRO with the attendees. I always seem to enjoy the groups that mae up the workshops but I felt a particular sense of accomplishment after this weekend. Either their receptiveness or my performance, probably both honestly, made the weekend a special one. I hope that they feel the same way. I gave them everything that I had emotionally and energetically:) There were retired and active duty military (thanks for serving by the way!), stay at home moms, former athletes, new trainers, seasoned trainers, people looking to switch careers, college students and more among the group. I believe that there were 3-5 people there that had trainers and wanted to share their results by becoming trainers themselves! Very cool!

The industry will be better off if we keep adding trainers like these to the mix.

I did have the chance to perform and integrated assessment on one of the students after class Friday. Her knees moving in and a hip drop were her two most prominent movement compensations. Upon further examination, she had a rotation in the left side of her pelvis and her sacro-illiac joint was restricted. I recommended that she see a physical therapist, chiropractor, or some form of manual therapist that could properly assess and treat her. Se has some corrective exercise ahead of her to balance off her l-p-h-c (core) even thought she is not in pain…yet:) Hopefully we caught this soon enough!

Oh…I did not see Tiger Woods…but there was a Jim Furyk sighting!!!

That is it for me tonight, thanks for reading and stay cool!!!!
